Abstract
Background:
Socio-economic marginalization significantly exacerbates health disparities, particularly among vulnerable occupational and transient groups. In the Murshidabad district of West Bengal, brick kiln workers (eatha pathane wale workers) and the homeless population represent two highly vulnerable cohorts facing extreme poverty, severe housing insecurity, and limited access to formal healthcare infrastructure. These compounded vulnerabilities place them at a heightened risk for chronic nutritional deficiencies, most notably anemia, which severely impairs productivity, quality of life, and long-term health outcomes.
Objectives:
This research project, conducted under the auspices of the RPIHE Foundation and managed by Saurabh Yadhav, aims to investigate the prevalence and severity of anemia among brick kiln workers and homeless populations in the Murshidabad district. Furthermore, the study seeks to evaluate the structural, economic, and social barriers restricting their access to public health interventions, nutritional support, and medical care.
Methodology:
The study will adopt a cross-sectional, mixed-methods design, combining quantitative health assessments (such as hemoglobin level screening) with qualitative surveys and focused interviews. Data will be collected across multiple brick kiln sites and urban/semi-urban homeless settlements within the Murshidabad district. Structured questionnaires will capture socio-demographic profiles, dietary habits, occupational hazards, and perceived barriers to healthcare utilization.
Expected Outcomes:
The findings aim to provide empirical evidence on the burden of anemia and healthcare exclusion within these invisible populations. By mapping these disparities, the project will generate actionable insights and policy recommendations for the RPIHE Foundation, local health authorities, and policymakers to design targeted, equity-driven public health interventions, mobile health clinics, and nutritional supplementation programs tailored to marginalized workers and the homeless.
